In Legacy of Spies, Macfadyen takes on the role of George Smiley, a legendary spymaster, while Hunnam portrays Alec Leamas, an experienced field operative. The series is adapted from John le Carré's 1963 novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, and it also incorporates elements from his later work, A Legacy of Spies, published in 2017.

The plot centers around Leamas as he recruits Doris Quinz, played by Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, a young East German woman, for a perilous mission.
